Working in a charity often means doing more with less – tight budgets, small teams and the constant need to create compelling content, raise awareness, engage supporters and increase donations. I know how overwhelming it can be when resources are limited and the pressure to deliver never stops. Marketing is essential in supporting your fundraising efforts, but without the right tools, it can feel like a challenge.
The good news? There are various free (or discounted for nonprofits) digital marketing tools that can streamline your charity’s marketing efforts and boost engagement and donations. From simplifying the creation of captivating graphics to scheduling social media posts ahead of time to tracking your results, the right digital marketing tools can make a huge difference.
In this post, I’ve compiled 5 must-have digital marketing tools for charity fundraising, each one designed to help you work smarter, not harder and ultimately make a bigger impact for your cause.
1. Canva– The Easier Way to Create Designs
Professional-looking designs are essential for capturing attention and clearly communicating the message in campaigns. However, if your charity doesn’t have an in-house graphic designer or hiring a freelancer seems out of reach, creating these can feel like a daunting task. But with Canva, you can simplify the process and create attractive visuals without requiring an expert.
Why it’s powerful:
Canva provides pre-made templates for various marketing materials including posters, social media graphics, flyers, email headers and even presentations. These templates are customisable, so you can quickly adapt them to match your charity’s brand.
For example, let’s say you’re planning a fundraising event. You need eye-catching posters for community centres and shops, engaging social media graphics for Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, promotional email headers and an event page header. Without a tool like Canva, producing these from scratch would take hours, but with its intuitive drag-and-drop interface you can create all these materials in a fraction of the time.
Features to note:
- Free pro plan for charities: The free plan is powerful in itself, but Canva also offers its Pro features at no cost to registered charities. This gives you access to premium templates, photos, videos and the ability to resize designs and remove backgrounds.
- Branding assets: You can upload your brand colours, logos and fonts, ensuring every design you produce is consistent and on-brand.
- Collaborative: Canva allows numerous team members to collaborate on a design, making it great for charities with small marketing teams or volunteers.
Over the years I’ve seen many charities benefit from using Canva. I believe that it’s an essential tool for any marketing and/or fundraising team. As much as I love Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, Canva is quicker, more straightforward and saves valuable time when your team is stretched thin.
2. Buffer – Social Media Management Efficiency
For any charity, social media is a powerful tool to raise awareness, engage with your community and drive donations. However, managing multiple social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X can quickly become overwhelming. When posting manually on each platform, it’s easy to miss posts and it can become a drain on your time. This is where Buffer is incredibly beneficial and why I recommend it as the second digital marketing tool for charity fundraising. Buffer is a social media management platform that allows you to schedule posts and track engagement from all your platforms in one place.
Why it’s perfect for charities:
By planning and scheduling social media posts in advance, you’re not scrambling to post throughout the day and you don’t have to log in and post manually. This helps you save time and work more efficiently, allowing you to focus on other tasks.
For example, if you’re running a fundraising campaign, you’re likely posting on several social platforms and using many formats. Buffer lets you prepare all your posts ahead of time. From Facebook posts to Instagram stories to X updates, you can manage everything from a single dashboard.
Also, if you post content that your audience loves consistently, you’re more likely to appear in the social feed and get better engagement.
Features to note:
- Free multi-platform management: You can connect up to three social profiles/pages on Buffer’s free plan and it supports scheduling posts for X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest. You can schedule 10 posts on each channel every month. The free plan also allows you to monitor comments and respond to them.
- Analytics: Buffer’s free plan offers very basic analytics, so you can monitor which posts are resonating with your audience, allowing you to make data-driven decisions about future content.
- Pain plan discount for charities: If your charity decides it wants to post more frequently and see more advanced analytics than the free plan allows, Buffer offers a 50% discount on its 2 paid plans. Unfortunately, the tool doesn’t allow you to manage direct messages.
Charities with limited time and resources can greatly benefit from Buffer’s ability to plan and track social media efforts without getting bogged down in the day-to-day posting grind. Of course, there will always be some last-minute posts that can’t be avoided, but Buffer can help you get ahead where possible.

3. Mailchimp – Nurturing Relationships with Your Supporters
Email marketing is still one of the most effective ways to build and strengthen your relationship with your supporters and volunteers, whether you’re sending out monthly newsletters, a fundraising campaign email series or a thank you to donors. However, manually managing your email campaigns can be a time-consuming task, especially for a small team. This is where Mailchimp can help, providing charities with a user-friendly email marketing platform that streamlines the process.
Why it works for charities:
Mailchimp makes it easy to personalise and automate emails, so you can engage your supporters more effectively (and hopefully gain more donations), whilst saving valuable time.
For example, if your charity has organised a skydive, you can automate a series of emails to encourage sign ups. You can also create an automated thank-you email that gets sent immediately after a donor makes a contribution. This small gesture can help foster loyalty and encourage repeat donations.
Features to note:
- Free plan for small charities: Mailchimp offers a free plan for charities if you have less than 250 subscribers and it allows you to send up to 500 emails per month. For charities with larger lists, there is a 15% discounted for nonprofits on paid plans.
- Personalisation: On the free plan, you can personalise your email campaigns with the first and second name of each donor or volunteer. With a paid plan, you can take this further and personalise based on their previous interactions with your charity. Mailchimp also offers send time optimisation on its standard plan and above to help enhance engagement.
- Automation: Mailchimp’s automation feature allows you to set up welcome emails or event reminders on the free plan. These can be sent on a date you set. For more advanced automation, a paid plan will allow you to set up multi-step automation, such as a sequence of emails for a specific campaign. Both can save your team time and effort.
If email marketing isn’t a channel your charity is using yet, I highly recommend considering Mailchimp. Most of the charities I’ve worked with or in, use it, and I personally believe it’s a powerful tool when utilised correctly. It simplifies the process of staying connected with supporters, while offering features that can help maximise your impact.
4. Google Analytics 4 – Helping You Understand Your Impact
As a charity, tracking your digital marketing results allows you understand what is and isn’t helping you to reach your goals e.g. more visibility, more donations. However, many charities struggle to track results accurately, often relying on vague metrics with very little clarity on the things that matter. This is why I recommend Google Analytics 4 (GA4) as the fourth digital marketing tool for charity fundraising. It gives you insights into how your visitors arrive at, and interact with your website, helping you focus on the efforts that truly drive results.
Why it’s essential for charities:
GA4 shows what channels your website visitors are coming from, which channel is bringing in the most and least traffic, how engaged they are and with the right set up, what campaigns are most effective and what’s generating enquiries, sign ups and donations. As a result, you can make better decisions on where to spend the little budget you have. And the best news… GA4 is free, so it won’t cost you a penny.
For example, you can track whether organic social media or email are driving more traffic to your donation page and which audience is more engaged. You can go even more granular by adding UTMs to campaigns, allowing you to break it down to specific ads, posts or email links.
Features to note:
- Comprehensive data: GA4 provides detailed insights into your website’s traffic sources, user behaviour, demographics and much more. You can see how visitors are engaging with your site and which pages are converting the best.
- Donation and enquiries tracking: For charities that take donations on their website, GA4 allows you to set up conversion tracking to measure how many visitors are donating and through which channels. The same with enquiries.
- Customisable reporting: GA4 allows you to set up custom reports that focus on the metrics that matter most to your charity. Whether it’s tracking social media traffic, search engine traffic or monitoring donation page performance, GA4 provides the data you need to make informed decisions.
I’ve met numerous charities who don’t have GA4 set up or aren’t using it to its full advantage, so you’re not alone! But I highly recommend getting it as you can obtain invaluable data to help your charity track their progress, optimise campaigns and ultimately amplify their impact. By setting up GA4, you can track your marketing efforts more effectively, allowing you to focus on what truly drives your mission forward.
5. SurveyMonkey – Gathering Actionable Feedback from Your Supporters
Collecting feedback to understand what your audience thinks is crucial for charities looking to improve their fundraising, engagement and overall impact. However, manually creating and analysing surveys can be time‑consuming, particularly for teams with limited capacity. This is where SurveyMonkey can be beneficial; it provides charities with a simple and powerful survey tool to streamline feedback collection and gain valuable insights.
Why it works for charities:
SurveyMonkey helps charities easily create professional surveys to collect feedback from donors, volunteers and event participants, without needing technical expertise. You can use the feedback to help refine your campaigns, fine-tune your messaging and enhance your supporter engagement. Whether you’re evaluating the success of a fundraising event or seeking donor preferences, SurveyMonkey helps you quickly gather the information you need to drive meaningful change.
For example, a charity that recently hosted a coffee and cake event can use SurveyMonkey to ask attendees about their experience. Feedback might show that people enjoyed the event, but they stated they would have preferred the event at a different time or a more accessible location. This information gives the charity the opportunity to change the time and location, ensuring higher turnout and satisfaction. SurveyMonkey explain more use cases on their website.
Features to note:
- Free plan for charities: SurveyMonkey offers a free plan that allows you to produce basic surveys with up to 10 questions and 25 responses per survey. You can use common question types including multiple choice, dropdown, tick boxes and text box. You also get limited analytics. For premium plans, which provide advanced features like unlimited questions, responses, more questions types and data analysis tools, charities can get a 25% discount from the annual cost.
- Customisable nonprofit templates: SurveyMonkey provides various pre-designed templates tailored for charities, including for donor feedback, volunteer surveys, market research and event planning, helping you create surveys quickly and without a steep learning curve. Some are on the paid plan and some are free. The paid plan also allows you to add your logo and brand colours to surveys for clear branding.
- Easy data analysis: The free plan offers very basic analysis showing you how many said ‘excellent’ for example, and gathers all the answers to each question together. The paid plan offers custom charts and the ability to download the data.
If your charity isn’t currently collecting structured feedback, SurveyMonkey is a straightforward tool that can help you understand your audience better. By using surveys to listen to donors, volunteers and event attendees, you’ll gain insights that can improve your fundraising effectiveness, boost supporter satisfaction and help you make more informed decisions about your next campaign.
